Both are woven, both are sold in the same widths, and on a datasheet they look close enough to be interchangeable. They are not. The choice changes how the fastener behaves in year three, outdoors, in a wash cycle, or in a hot car.
Side by side
| Property | Nylon (polyamide) | Polyester (PET) |
|---|---|---|
| Peel strength | Higher — typically 3.2–6.0 N/25 mm | Moderate — 2.8–3.5 N/25 mm |
| Cycle life | 5,000–10,000 cycles | 3,000–5,000 cycles |
| UV resistance | Poor — degrades in direct sun | Good |
| Moisture regain | 4–4.5% — swells, dries slowly | Under 1% — stays dimensionally stable |
| Service temperature | -20 to 80 °C, up to 150 °C heat-stabilised | -30 to 120 °C |
| Chemical resistance | Fair; attacked by strong acids | Good |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
The decision rule
Indoors, high cycle count, maximum grip: nylon. Upholstery, seating, bags, apparel closures, anything opened and closed thousands of times.
Outdoors, wet, or hot: polyester. Marine covers, agricultural covers, outdoor signage, anything that sees sun and rain and cannot be replaced.
Anything above 100 °C: neither, if you can avoid it. Move to heat-stabilised nylon (150 °C) or, for protective clothing and welding environments, meta-aramid.
Why nylon fails outdoors
UV breaks the polyamide chain. The surface gets chalky, hooks lose their spring, and peel strength drops measurably within a season of direct sun. An additive can slow this, but it does not stop it. If the application is outside and permanent, polyester is the honest answer even though its numbers look weaker on paper.
Why polyester disappoints indoors
Lower peel and fewer cycles. On a sofa cushion that is opened twice a day for fifteen years, the polyester version will feel loose long before the nylon one does. The cost saving is real but so is the difference in feel.
Mixing the two
It is entirely normal — and often the right answer — to pair a nylon hook with a polyester loop. The hook provides grip, the loop provides durability. We do this for outdoor furniture where the hook is protected inside a seam and only the loop face sees sunlight. Ask if you want this combination quoted; it is not on the standard price list.
What we would specify
Apparel and footwear: nylon, 0.8 mm profile. Seating and upholstery: heavy-duty nylon. Marine and outdoor covers: polyester. Automotive interior: FR nylon to FMVSS 302. Firefighting and welding: meta-aramid. If your application is none of these, tell us the environment and we will pick.
